The book of Kells is one of the most lavishly decorated books in early medieval history. Its origins are steeped in mystery and it is believed to have been partially created on the sacred island of Iona, off the island of Mull. Thought to date from the beginning of the 9th century, the book contains numerous pages of exquisitely detailed and intensively colourful designs.

In this workshop we shall explore the sources of the colours used by the creators of the book. During the day we will create an authentic palette of genuine colours looking at how they were made and obtained at the time.

Participants will go home with a palette of paint and inks made from a range of historical pigments also found in the book.

Every workshop at The Old Mill begins with a hot drink of your choice including specialist coffees, and home baked biscuits. We hope that our workshops are a real treat for yourself or a loved one, as well as a rich learning experience.
