Trysting Trees

Trysting Trees is a series of theoretical and creative workshops based on trees commonly found in the UK and Ireland. The project is an ongoing inquiry into plant connection, through the lens of artists, gardeners and foragers.

In each workshop we grow an attunement to the tree in question through the following methods and mediums;

  • Naming of trees, botanical and place specific. What can the etomology of names both common and botanical tell us.

  • Identification, habitat, how to grow/propagate.

  • How can we learn about each tree's integral role in the web of life. How do other species interact with the tree, and it back?

  • Medicinal properties: tinctures, wine, flower essences, tea infusions, syrups. How is each tree known to be helpful in aiding human health.

  • Food, which parts of each tree is edible and how.

  • Exploring significance in culture and folklore. What is laying dormant in our own consciousness and how can we learn ways of integrating trees into the human experience?

  • How have they inspired costume and image making?

  • Making art materials using various parts of the tree: plant dyes, inks, paints, papers, charcoal and mark making tools.

  • Developing a personal relationship with a tree, exploring various methods to remember significant properties each tree has that we can use to help us in daily life. Finding a tree, or several trees which can be visited easily in the future.

Participants go away with many bits and pieces made either prior by us, or during the workshop so do bring plenty of jars and containers with you.

The trees we are trysting in 2024 are Birch, Oak and Alder. Dates and details coming soon.
