We can be booked to facilitate workshops and give talks outside of The Old Mill, please get in touch to find out more. Private group sessions can also be booked here at the mill.

Examples of topics we cover are:

  • Making artists charcoal.

  • Pigments, what are they, where do they come from, how to make/forage them.

  • How to make paint, what binders make what paint and how to make/forage them.

  • Inks from a wide range of sources, using bought, grown and foraged ingredients.

  • Dyes, how to use them to dye fabric for use in making art, and in dying paper.

  • Paper making, from recycled paper and plants, additions and using the process to creative with.

  • Crayons and pastel making.

  • Pens, paintbrushes and other creative tools from various sources.

  • Making non toxic printing inks for working onto paper.

  • Simple wild clay palettes and ink vessels.

We also run workshops and talks which focus on the development of colour and creative materials through a historical and cultural lens. Examples: ‘Timelines of Colour: The Alure of Blue’, ‘The Medieval Palette’, and ‘The Alchemy of Tannin and Iron, ink recipes from the middle ages’.
