The Alchemy of Tannin and Iron: Creating writing and drawing inks from medieval recipes AT THE DUKES OF WESTBARNS (FIFE) 11th May
During this workshop, you will delve into the alchemical world of ancient ink. We will reveal some of the recipes and methods which were applied in ink manufacturing during the middle ages and how they were then used. We will witness the reactive relationship between iron and tannin and how this combination has been crucial to ink formulation throughout history.
You will experience and learn how to make rich dark writing and drawing inks based on intriguing medieval recipes, as well as the time old ink made from oak galls. We will also be making inks from some more unusual sources that can be foraged from the local landscape.
Alongside ink making, participants will learn how to make various types of dip pens from reed and bamboo.
Pens and Inks made during the session will then be available to take home at the end of the day.
